Royal Air Force officer's ranking braid is an item of blue and black woven braid that is typically worn on the sleeve of an RAF officer's jacket and is used to designate his or her rank. In this instance, one single thick blue stripe on a thin piece of black material indicates the rank of Flying Officer. According to RAF dress regulations, the rank braid must be positioned so that the center of the braid is 9.5cm or 3 & 3/4" from the edge of the sleeve cuff.
